About this Cellar

Baker's Springs Wines

William Baker, the first to introduce sheep to the area, settled near Hermitage Creek in the Gilbert Valley in 1840. He watered his stock from the fresh water springs found on the property of Mr. John Baker and was so grateful of this land and for the use of the fresh spring water, that he named the village “Baker’s Springs”. The springs were used by many early     travellers including the bullockies carrying copper and trade between Burra and Port Adelaide and in 1862 Mr Alfred Howitt watered his camels and horses here, when returning with the remains of Burke and Wills. In the township now known as Rhynie, there is but one small well remaining located to the south-west of the Hotel which carried this historical name until 1938, testimony to the history of this area.

Many waterways and creeks stream through the area, among them Woolshed Flat Creek - affectionately known by the locals as “Woolsheds”. This flows through a flat where the woolshed once stood – to shear the sheep of that vast holding known as “Hermitage”…

Baker’s Springs Wines has drawn on this history, together with the terroir that has extensive terra-rossa, dry summers and mild climate, to produce wines that can be savoured now, or cellared for future enjoyment.
