Description

The wine will only be released in years of exceptional quality and varietal expression in this small, single vineyard. Only a few hundred six packs as well as larger formats of the 2005 Attunga 1865 Shiraz will be released.
Winemaker Kevin Mitchell has provided the following notes about the 2005 season and the resulting wine.
"The 2005 season was a good one for Shiraz in the Clare Valley; predominantly dry during the ripening period but with substantial rain in early January that sustained these old vineyards through until complete flavour ripeness in mid March.
The berries were small, thick skinned and intensely coloured and flavoured, evenly ripened and cropped at around 2.0 tonnes per acre. The fruit was all hand picked. Fruit was harvested at 15.0 Baumé, fermented in shallow open vats for 8 days, then basket pressed and allowed to mature in 100% new French oak hogsheads for 28 months. The wine remained in barrel before racking and bottling unfiltered. The wine is deep red in colour, the aroma redolent of the rich aromas of spicy plums and mocha chocolate. Palate is rich, textural yet providing surprising balance and finesse. The mouth filling sweet fruit characters of plums, chocolate and cloves combine with the fine tannins and oak complexity."
The wine was bottled in July 2007 and will be available from November 1st".
